Championing Good Sportsmanship in Youth Sports

Why Enjoy the Game?

Negative emotions and improper behavior from coaches, parents, players and fans can ruin a youth sporting event by creating a tense, unhealthy atmosphere.

Conflict and problems typically surface when someone “crosses-over” and decides to play somebody else’s role. The most common are coaches playing officials … parents playing coach … and players playing officials. In order to maintain a positive and encouraging environment it’s critical that everyone, especially the adults, stay in their lane and play their assigned role.

The purpose of Enjoy the Game is to educate coaches, parents, players and fans on the Poor Sportsmanship Traps and the individual roles they play in every youth sporting event. Defining what it means to Enjoy the Game and then holding each other accountable will ensure everyone truly enjoys the youth sports experience.

How Does the Program Work?

3 Easy Steps to Good Sportsmanship Success. . .

TRAINING

This is a critical step in successfully launching Enjoy the Game in any youth sports league. It’s very important that EVERYONE who participates fully understand and is on board with the Enjoy the game message.

RePurposed Coaching’s Vision Coaches can train all of your league’s team coaches in a 25 minute In-Person Coaches Training Session or you can ask them to watch the Coaches Training Video on this site. This will assist them so they can train their players and parents in a brief pre-season meeting before their first game. All of the printed materials will be provided to each coach to support their team training efforts. (Referee/Umpire training is also highly recommended)

VENUE SIGNAGE

While the training step plays a key role in the launch of Enjoy the Game in the league … the training without regular reminders will only offer a short term benefit. The ongoing success of Enjoy the Game is in the signage (banners, stand-alone signs, etc) that is displayed at each of your fields or courts. This signage will be provided by RePurposed Coaching with your league’s Corporate Champion logo on it to not just remind everyone to “Enjoy the Game” … but it can also be a tool to assist people in holding each other accountable.

‘GOOD SPORT’ INCENTIVES

As with any training, offering incentives to those who display what has been taught to them will not only solidify the learning but also will influence others to do the same.

Therefore, RePurposed Coaching will enlist the support and funding from a local business to champion bringing this program to your youth sports organization at no charge. Many of these Corporate Champions will also offer Gotcha! Good Sport Award Coupons for FREE product that coaches can give to players who demonstrate Good Sportsmanship in their practices or games.
